News from the region New group takes on preservation in Floyd County
The new Heritage Preservation League of New Albany-Floyd County organized to boost awareness and advocacy for local landmarks, like Georgetown's historic Wolfe Hotel. |
In February, a coalition of Floyd County residents launched an effort to create a new countywide non-profit preservation organization focusing on New Albany, Greenville, Galena, Georgetown, and Floyds Knobs—the new Heritage Preservation League of New Albany-Floyd County (HPL). “The League envisions a Floyd county widely recognized for preserving and promoting its distinctive historic structures, landscapes, neighborhoods, communities, and archeological sites guided by expert stewardship, “ says Stephen Pacciano, President of HPL.
Five of the organization’s nine new board members represent Floyd County’s five townships; they will be working with volunteer committees to assess historic sites throughout the county. The group plans to identify threatened landmarks and highlight them on an annual list of endangered places. HPL is also planning to co-sponsor Preservation Month activities with Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana and other local groups in New Albany.
Pacciano and a recently appointed board is currently working on organizational by-laws for the group and securing non-profit status. For more information on the HPL, contact Stephen Pacciano at sbpacc@netzero.net.
